Choosing an Orthodontist

Is the doctor an orthodontic specialist?

Orthodontists are dentists who have completed an additional two to three years of advanced, full-time education beyond dental school, focused exclusively on diagnosing and correcting tooth alignment and jaw relationships.

Only dentists with this specialized training may call themselves orthodontists, and only orthodontists are eligible for membership in the American Association of Orthodontists.

Dr. Hengameh “Hannah” Karkhanechi earned her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California, San Diego and her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of California, San Francisco. After dental school, she completed her orthodontic specialty training in an intensive postgraduate program at New York University.

She continues to pursue advanced continuing education to stay current with evolving techniques and to provide thoughtful, evidence-based orthodontic care.

Is the orthodontist board certified?

Board certification is a voluntary process that goes beyond the requirements to practice orthodontics. It reflects a commitment to the highest standards of clinical excellence, ethical care, and continued learning.

Dr. Hengameh “Hannah” Karkhanechi is a board-certified orthodontist and a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics.

To become board certified, orthodontists must complete a rigorous examination process that includes written and clinical components, as well as detailed case presentations demonstrating excellence in diagnosis, treatment planning, and results. Fewer orthodontists choose to pursue board certification, making it an important distinction when selecting a provider.

Board certification reflects Dr. Karkhanechi’s dedication to clinical precision, thoughtful treatment planning, and long-term outcomes for her patients.

Does the office use comprehensive diagnostic records?

Yes. Dr. Karkhanechi utilizes computerized cephalometric analysis as part of the diagnostic process when appropriate. This analysis helps evaluate jaw relationships, facial growth patterns, and treatment considerations.

These records support careful treatment planning and allow for a more precise understanding of each patient’s bite and long-term orthodontic needs.

Is the office compliant with safety and sterilization standards?

Patient and team safety are taken very seriously.

Our practice follows strict sterilization and infection control protocols and complies fully with all OSHA requirements. We utilize modern sterilization systems and work with professional consultants to regularly monitor office safety and sterilization procedures.

Is the practice focused on patient care and communication?

Yes. We believe orthodontic care should feel personal, respectful, and well-communicated.

Patients and families appreciate the welcoming environment, clear education, and open communication with our team. Questions are encouraged, and feedback is always welcome. Our goal is to understand your needs and support you throughout your orthodontic journey.
